A device for controlling the electrical stimulation by a generator (11), Fig. 2 (not shown) of locomotive activity of a person comprises an air filled plastics chamber 4, for location under the ball of the foot, arranged between a substantially rigid top sole 1 and a flexible lower sole 3 of a shoe 2, and communicating via an air channel 10 with a flexible diaphragm 9 which when pressure is exerted on the sole 3 operates a microswitch 7 located in the heel 5 of the shoe. Alternatively the chamber 4 may be filled with any suitable fluid or be made in the form of a separate insole comprising two layers of flexible material which form the boundaries of the chamber. Either form of the chamber may communicate via a flexible tube with a diaphragm and switch placed external to the shoe. The generator (11) supplies impulses to predetermined regions of the leg via two contact electrodes (14, 15) for stimulating muscular or nervous tissues concerned with locomotion. The generator is constructed with a suitable variable pulse delay so that the shoe containing the control device may be worn either on the leg which is stimulated or on the other leg.
