Abstract

1,252,253. Counting passengers. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Nov., 1968 [17 Oct., 1967], No. 47306/67. Heading G4D. Apparatus for counting persons passing a check point comprises two vertically aligned spaced light or infra-red beams which must be broken simultaneously to stop the counter. As applied to a device for indicating the number of people on the upper deck of a bus, two vertical pairs of infra-red sources 10, 11 and 12, 13 and associated detectors are arranged in staggered relationship so that the first or second pair. of beams are broken first according to whether a passenger is ascending or descending. As described in Specification 1,251,371 a reversible binary counter is stepped accordingly. A decoding matrix feeds to the driver a read-out of the number of passengers, and when the number of vacant seats is small an appropriate display is given at the foot of the stairs.
