Abstract

1,252,029. Work-holding. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 27 March, 1969, No. 16165/69. Heading B3B. [Also in Division H5] A blade 12 for a fluid flow machine, partly embedded in a block 16 of fusible material which acts as a work-holder whilst machining operations are performed on the exposed portion of the blade 12 is removed from the block by passing an electric current through it to melt the block 16 in the vicinity of the blade and applying opposing forces to the block 16 and blade 12. As shown, the block 16 is a lead-based alloy and current is supplied to the blade 12 by means of a clamp 20 engaging the block 16 and a clamp 18 engaging the blade 12. Alternatively the block 16 is insulating, e.g. a thermoplastic or gelatinous material and the current is passed directly through the blade.
