Abstract

1,251,726. Feeding webs. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 26 March, 1970 [26 March, 1969; 11 June, 1969], Nos. 15785/69 and 29665/69. Heading B8B. A supply magazine for apparatus, e.g. a cigarette-making machine, requiring a supply of continuous web material comprises a rotatably mounted cylindrical housing 1; pins 17 for supporting a plurality of coils 8 to 12 of web material; a fixed turner bar 16 for guiding the web out of the housing along a path centre upon the rotational axis of the housing; a motor 7 for rotating the housing 1; and means 15 for controlling the motor 1 so as to avoid any substantial twist occurring in the web traversing said path. As shown, the coils are spliced together so that the web is drawn from the inside of alternate coils and from the outside of the remaining coils. Thus, in operation, as the web is taken from the housing at a constant rate it leaves each coil at an increasing radius, there being a sudden change from an outermost radius to an innermost radius as each coil becomes exhausted. To compensate for these changes so that the web remains untwisted as it leaves the housing, the speed of the motor 7 is controlled in a corrective manner so that the tangential speed at which the web leaves the respective coil is equal to the speed at which the web leaves the housing. To this end, the web passes through a slotted plate 15 which is so mounted as to tend to rotate in response to any twist in the web, any such rotation causing the speed of the motor 7 to vary by virtue of a control connection 18 which may include a field rheostat. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the coils are spliced together alternately at their innermost and outermost ends, a central supporting spindle is provided, and a photo-electric device is arranged to control the speed of the motor 7.
