Abstract
1,251,555. Drying and skinning sausage casings. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 7 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6822/69. Heading A2B. In a process in which an extruded sausage casing tubing 14 in an inflated condition, is dried in zone 12 and shirred by shirring means S, the tubing 14 being inflated by air supplied through mandrel 16, the tubing 14 is compressed by feed means 18 to limit the air flow passing from the tubing in the shirring zone to that in the drying zone whereby a predetermined air pressure differential is established in the tubing between the shirring and drying zones. The feed means 18 may comprise a pair of resilient rollers 26, 28 each comprising one (or more) groove 34, 36 which mate to form a constricted passage 38 for the air flow from the shirring zone to the drying zone. The feed means may comprise (Fig. 6 + 7 not shown) a pair of resilient endless belts having longitudinal grooves or (Fig. 5 not shown) a non-resilient roller having peripheral grooves cooperating with a roller having an inflatable sleeve. The tubing may be made from collagen, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate or an alginate.
