Ordnance design; smoke and gases, deflecting. -Relates to muzzle attachments for reducing recoil, of the kind comprising a tube having a number of surfaces to which the gun gases gain access through suitable ports and are thereby deflected rearwardly. According to the invention, the rear part of the tube is also provided with one or more surfaces for deflecting the gases at right-angles to the axis of the gun to constitute a gas screen. In the form .shown in Fig. 1, the muzzle attachment A, which is of slightly larger internal diameter than the bore of the gun, is provided with a number of rings A' providing between them curved passages which deflect rearwardly the gun gases passing through ports a. The space a<2> between the rearmost rings extends at right-angles to the axis of the gun so that the gases escaping therefrom form a screen to protect the gunners. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the passages a<1> are formed by drilling holes through a. thickened circumferentially-grooved portion of the attachment A.
