A sausage casing of synthetic tubular material is sealed adjacent to one end by means of a band which encloses and constricts the tubular material, the portion of the casing which the band encloses and constricts having an outer reinforcing layer extending beyond the end of the tubular material and the band bearing substantially only on the reinforcing layer. The reinforcing layer may be attached to the tubular material by an adhesive and may take the form of either one or more strips wrapped around the tubular material or as shown in Fig. 3, a collar or cylindrical sleeve 6 which fits closely over the end of the tubular material.
