Abstract

1,250,807. Tyre building apparatus. E. J. HARRIS. 15 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 54450/68. Heading B7C: Tyre building apparatus comprises a rotatable cylindrical drum G separable axially into two drum portions 55, 56, a chuck 200, 201 supporting a bladder 218 inflatable into a toroidal configuration and having its axis co-incident with that of the drum, and non-rotatable gripping means 106, 110 located either side of the bladder and arranged for movement towards and away from the bladder and radially inwardly and outwardly so that during tyre manufacture a carcass band formerly supported on the drum may be gripped and moved around the bladder. A tyre is manufactured in the following manner: Initially the drum portions are separated and beads are stored on members 123, the drum portions being then brought together into contact with the inflated bladder. The carcass band is then built up upon the drum in the usual manner, the drum portions being rotated by means of motor 46 by way of spline 45, pulleys 48, 49, belts, pulleys 50, 51, pinion 28 and ring gear 27, the latter being connected to castings 22 on the exterior of which the drum portions slide. The chuck is rotated also by the motor 46 from pulley 51 by means of pinion 31 and ring gear 33. The drum portions are then withdrawn along the castings by engagement with rope and pulley means 63, 61 actuated by a pneumatic ram. Support rollers may then if necessary be placed under the carcass if necessary to prevent it collapsing. Gripping bands 106, 110 mounted on arms 87 then clamp the ends of the carcass and are then reduced in size as carriages mounting the arms move towards the chuck and shape the carcass over the bladder. After release of the gripping means the beads are placed on beads setters 125 and applied against the carcass. Turn up wheels 160 then position the band edges around the beads by rotation of the chuck. Breakers, tread and side walls are then stitched on to the carcass in the normal way before quill 205 is disengaged from the chuck and the tyre removed. The carriages supporting the arms 87 are actuated by rams 148, 149 and 155, 156, 158. The bead ring supports are retractable to reduce the diameter thereof by a gear mechanism thereby allowing removal of the tyre.
