Abstract

1,249,548. Underwater drilling apparatus; offshore structures. INDUSTRIEELE HANDELSCOMBINATIE HOLLAND N.V. 24 Sept., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 47060/69. Headings E1F and E1H. [Also in Division G3] Underwater drilling apparatus for sinking casings 1, 2 and cementing them in place consists of a frame 3 connected to the casings and a drill and motor for each casing mounted on a box 8 which is detachable from the frame. The drills extend below the casings and have pivoted extending bits (Fig. 7 not shown) so that holes large enough for the casings are drilled while allowing the bits to be withdrawn upwards. When drilling is completed; cement is fed through a pipeline 13 to the casings. The. cement also moves a plunger 31 (Fig. 2) connected by a push rod 30 and .cables 28 to pins 27 which are withdrawn to release the drill motors 9, 10. and box 8 from the frame 3. Finally, a line 72 is pulled, withdrawing a pin connecting the pipeline 13 to the frame 3, to allow the pipeline to be raised. To preserve stability during drilling, there may be one or more hydraulic support legs 18. Drilling fluid supplied through a line 14 is distributed .to the drill motors and the support legs by a distributor 11 comprising a series of nozzles discharging against a plate which is kept horizontal by a universally mounted pendulum on which it is mounted. The pressure differentials across the respective nozzles vary according to the attitude of the frame, and are used to operate diaphragm controlled valves which control the fluid supply to the motors and/or support legs.
