A crushing machine comprises a circular grating 3 resting on a support, a drive for rotating a crushing member 5 (i.e. a roller) about the centre of the grating 1 and a detector which detects angular displacement of the circular grating relative to the support. Bulk material is fed to the machine via a chute 8 and crushed against the grating, and when resistance to rotation of the member 5 exceeds a predetermined value the circular grating 3 is so angularly displaced as to cause the detector to disable the drive. The detector comprises a roller 13 rotatable about a pin 18, and coupled to a switch 7. A guide member 15 contacts the roller when a portion of a mill-cover 6 in which the switch is mounted is closed. Adjustable pressure screws 17 permit the frictional force opposing angular displacement of the die or grating 3 to be varied. Movement of the grating rotates the roller to bring a flap 14 in opposition to the grating, thus operating the switch.
