Abstract

1,249,257. Coatings. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 8 July, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 34443/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Cellulosic substrates are coated with aqueous dispersions containing 45-55% by weight of solids, comprising (1) 30-60% by weight, based on solids, of an ethylene/vinyl alkanoate oopolymer of 60-82% by weight ethylene and 18-40% vinyl alkanoate; (2) 10-20% of either neoprene or an at least 40% hydrolyzed ethylene/vinyl alkanoate copolymer containing, prior to hydrolysis, 60-82% ethylene and 18-40% vinyl alkanoate; and (3) 40-55% of a hydrocarbon wax. Vinyl alkanoate: vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or 2-ethyl hexoate. Hydrocarbon wax: paraffin and microcrystalline waxes, beeswax, carnauba wax and polyethylene wax (M.W. 2,000-6,000). The waxes employed may have melting points in the range 49-93‹C. The term "hydrolyzed" covers alcoholysis, saponification and hydrolysis. The dispersions are produced by stirring together preformed dispersions of (1) the ethylene/vinyl alkanoate copolymer and wax, (2) ethylene/vinyl alkanoate copolymer (if necessary), and (3) neoprene or the hydrolyzed ethylene/vinyl alkanoate copolymer. The product dispersions may be applied to porous cellulosic substrates (glassine, sulphite paper, kraft paper, pouch stock, newsback board or regenerated cellulose) by the usual techniques, normally at a coating weight per ream of less than 10 1bs. e.g. 7.5 1bs. Examples disclose the gloss, moisture barrier and adhesion in the presence of oil or water, of a coating of the product dispersions on glassine paper.
