Abstract

124,896. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). April 1918. Hooks and like small goods, sewing-machines for attaching.-In a machine, such as a sewing or stapling machine, for attaching articles such as hooks, the work-holder is movable so as to present the work to the fastening-mechanism successively in different positions for the reception of successive attaching-means. The invention is described as applied to a sewing-machine for the purpose of inserting fastening-stitches b, F:g. 12, first in the throat of a hook, and then stitches d through the eyes e. The work holder comprises two clamping-members 64, 65, Fig. 7, connected together for rotary movement, but with relative lateral movement, by a pin-and.socket connexion 71, 72. The members are pivoted on pins 62, 63 journaled in blocks 58, 59 secured to, two arms 56, 57 pivoted on a jogging spring- pressed plate 38 secured to the work-supporting plate 33 through the block 36. The pin 62 is provided with a crank 67 which is connected by an adjustable -two-part link 89 to a pivoted arm 99 carrying a plate 101 with a V-shaped slot 102 traversed by a roller 103 on a bell-crank lever 104 actuated at the required intervals by cam-projections 106 on the control cam-wheel 12. A detent arm 114 and spring 117 holds the work-holder in either of its extreme positions. A hand-lever 110 and link 109 serve to move the work-holder for insertion of the work. At the completion of an operation, the plate 38 is raised by a projection on the presserba.r engaging a bent rod 82, and the arm 86b of a bell-crank lever contacts with a fixed abutment 88, the other arm moving a slide 77 with camslots 74 against a spring to open the clamping- jaws and release the work. The throat-plate 34 is formed with a tongue 35<1> projecting into the rectangular needle aperture, the function of which is to move the hook into correct position when turned at right-angles to the work-support. To provide relative, adjustment between the hookclamping members and the work-support, the plate 38 is connected to a slide plate 41 with a rectangular opening 43 engaged by an eccentric 44 carried by an adjusted lever 45 which is pivoted to the bar 10 which carries the work-support. The lever 45 works over a scale 48 and can be clamped in any desired position by a clamp-nut 51.
