Abstract

1,248,821. Psychedelic lighting. E. H. PHILLIPS. July 21, 1969, No.36613/69. Heading G2J. In psychedelic lighting equipment the speaker (30), Fig. 5 (not shown) connected to a record player 10 is wired in parallel with a transducer (48) so that the transducer cone (50), Fig.3 (not shown) oscillates in sympathy with the sound from the speaker. The cone supports a tray (52) containing a number of light reflecting elements 120 which are illuminated by a projector 90 and as the sound varies so will the reflected light pattern 122 on the ceiling. In a second embodiment Fig. 7 (not shown) the cone has a lamp (151) at its apex illuminating from below through a transparent window (154) a number of cut glass pieces (121) thereby achieving a similar light/sound relationship from the equipment. In a third embodiment Fig. 10 (not shown) the cone supports a number of antennae which are flexible but have sufficient stiffness to stand upright. The antennae are of such lengths that they form an arc at the top ends and the tops carry reflecting elements (221) which reflect light from a projector above. In a fourth embodiment Fig. 12 (not shown) a number of strings (363) carry reflecting elements (367) disposed along their lengths and the strings are mounted to follow the vibrations of the cone by having one end fixed to the cone and the other to a ring fixed to the case. A fifth embodiment Fig. 14 (not shown) incorporates elastic strings in a different arrangement but with similar reflectors. In an alternative method of illumination Fig. 18 (not shown) the projector has a template disc (600) placed at the end of the light tube, the template having a small opening in the form of a design e. g. a musical note; the issuing beam is therefore narrow and has a cross-section similar to the design. The reflectors are now merely sequins or platelets and a pattern similar to that of Fig. 1 is produced on the ceiling. In a further embodiment Fig. 19 (not shown) there are arranged four speaker-transducer pairs, each with its own projector reflector template system. The templates each have one of four separate aperture designs and are arranged in groups of four per projector and a solenoid-spring return system is used to allow any one design to be moved into or out of all the four beams. The electrical signals fed to the speaker-transducer pairs are separated into separate frequency bands e.g. by using a multitrack tape recorder so that each set of reflectors oscillates in a given band of frequencies only; the pattern observed on the ceiling will be the sum of the individual parts. The reflectors in this case are hemispheres with the flat faces highly polished or silvered and are used with the curved sides resting on a fabric pile material mounted on the cone. In a further embodiment Fig. 29 (not shown) only three transducer-speaker pairs are used, each corresponding to a frequency band as before and each using one of the recorder tracks, whilst the fourth track is used to produce signals to switch the template designs as desired. Other multi-track, multi-unit, assemblies may also be used.
