Abstract
1,248,792. Alumina-chromia grains. CARBORUNDUM CO. 19 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 60336/68. Heading C1J. [Also in Division C4] Sintered abrasive grains comprise finely divided bauxite and 2-20 wt. per cent chromium oxide. They are made from a mixture of bauxite, chromium oxide, a temporary binder, e.g. bentonite, starch, dextrine or methyl cellulose, and water, by forming into grains each comprising a plurality of particles of bauxite and chromium oxide, drying the grains and sintering at 1400-1700‹ C. in a neutral atmosphere. The bauxite suitably has an average particle size of 2-4 microns and the chromium one of 2 microns. The mixture is extruded into rods, e.g. of diameter 0À07 inch, and cut into cylinders of length/diameter ratio 2: 1. If an organic binder is included it is burnt out at 700-1100‹ C. before sintering.
