Abstract
1,248,744. Colour imaging. XEROX CORP. Oct.28, 1968 [Nov.1, 1967], No.51069/68. Heading G2H. A colour imaging process comprises the steps of (a) providing a layer comprising a mosaic pattern having a plurality of contiguous, discrete small areas of different colour, each discrete area comprising electrically photo-sensitive particles of a single colour in an electrically insulating softenable material, (b) substantially uniformly electrostatically charging the layer, (c) exposing the layer to an image pattern of polychromatic light and (d) developing the layer by decreasing the resistance to migration of the particles through the material so as to allow imagewise migration of the particles through the material. An insulating solvent or vapours thereof may be used to soften the layer. A two colour layer may be made but preferably the layer contains particles coloured cyan, magenta and yellow. Many suitable pigments are specified. The softenable material may be copoly styrene-vinyl toluene but other materials are listed. The layer may be supported by a substrate of Cu, brass, Ni, Zn, Cr, stainless steel, Al, Cd, Ag or Au or paper, glass, plastics or rubber which is either conductive or conductively coated. The layer may be formed by dispersing the particles in the softenable material and applying the dispersion to a substrate by gravure rollers, a half-tone screen, electrostatic deposition or spraying to give a plurality of beads each of a single colour. The beads are formed into a smooth layer by passing a heated roller over them, softening the material with solvent vapour or by heating, or pressing without application of heat. The beads may be formed as a mono- or multi-layer and the substrate may be treated with a layer of softenable material prior to application of the beads.
