Abstract
124,850. Andrews, E. N. Dec. 3, 1917. Sewing-machines; folding-devices; trimming or cutting; work supports.-In sewing-machines for shoe uppers, the edge of the material is guided in an upturned position to an horizontally-acting knife which nicks it, and is then acted on by an horizontally reciprocating finger which folds it preparatory to being stitched. A block 34 is secured to the bed of the machine and carries a pivoted finger 99 adjustable by a spring 98 and stop 97, between which and the curved upper sur face of the block the material is guided. The cutting-device comprises an arm 33 pivoted on the block 34 and provided with a downward pro jection coacting with a sliding knife 39 and strip ping-member 29. A reciprocating shaft 25 carries a pin 30 working in a slot in the knife and in the stripping-member, to which movement is im parted in advance of the knife through a spring 31 to clamp the edge of the material A spring plunger 26 acting eccentrically on the shaft 25 keeps the knife up to the work. The shaft is reciprocated by a link 22 adapted to be engaged by a lever 19 actuated by a cam on a countershaft 17 which is driven fron the looper shaft so as to make one nick for every two stitches. The link 22 is maintained in en gagement with the lever by an arm 42 on a rock shaft 43 under the influence of a spring 44, anc is disengaged therefrom by a spring 23 when the arm 42 is raised. The rock-shaft is acted on by a spring and stop to release the link, and, when turned into operative position, is held by a spring catch. The arm 33 is raised, with the presser foot, by a pin thereon engaging the slot 94. The folding-finger 68 is pivotally mounted on a block 67 sliding in the feed-bar and actuated by a lever driven by a cam on the countershaft 54. The position of the finger is adjusted by a screw 7( and spring 71. The machine is provided with interchangeable cylindrical and flat work-plates to suit the different kinds of work.
