Abstract

1,247,965. Raising liquids. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 24, 1969 [May 21, 1968], No.21128/69. Heading F1R. [Also in Divisions G6, E1] Liquid e.g. aqueous radio-active waste, is stored in an underground cavern by firstly filling the cavern with a bulk liquid e.g. hydrocarbon liquid, immiscible with the liquid to be stored, such that the hydrostatic head of bulk liquid and possible additional pressure imposed via line 21 on the bulk liquid surface prevents the leakage of underground water into the cavern, and subsequently transferring into the cavern a volume of liquid to be stored at the same time removing the displaced equal volume of bulk liquid, via line 17. The density of the bulk liquid may be greater than that of the liquid to be stored Fig. 2 (not shown). To obviate the need for a bulk liquid storage container, a plurality of caverns may be employed Fig. 3 (not shown) and the bulk liquid moved from a first to a second of the caverns as the first cavern is filled with the liquid to be stored.
