Abstract
1,247,879. Closing containers with foils. OHLER EKCO VERPACKUNGEN G.m.b.H., and E. SCHIERLE. 27 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 45895/68. Heading B8C. Filled, rimmed, containers are closed by foil covers by passing each container and cover upwardly through a drawing frame to bend the projecting edges of the cover downwardly about the container rim and then bending the downwardly directed edges of the cover inwardly and upwardly into contact with the underside of the container rim. One edge of the foil is provided with spaced apart cuts and crimped over into double thickness, the cover thus formed being applied to the container in such a way that part of the cuts are located upon the upper surface of the container rim thereby forming tearing tongues to facilitate removal of the cover. In the embodiment shown in the Figures, filled containers 6 are pushed along support rails 10 by the flights 8 of an endless chain 7 into a covering station where they are located below covers 16 cut from a continuous strip 36 fed from a roll 35. The container and cover are then pushed upwardly by a frame 13 through a drawing frame 11 against the action of a spring-biased plate 17 located directly above the drawing frame and the projecting edges of the cover are bent downwardly. Supporting fingers (see Fig. 9, not shown) are pivoted under the container and the frame 13 lowered and the spring-biased plate retained in its uppermost position by shoulder 24 and a co-operating locking bolt. The container and cover are finally transferred to a station in which the container is supported by a sprung support 28 and the downwardly projecting edges of the cover are engaged between an upper die 31 and lower dies 30, 31 to effect the inward and upward bending thereof into contact with the container rim. The foil, intermittently fed from roll 35, has a series of spaced apart cuts made in one edge by a pair of knives 38. The edge thus cut is crimped double by a crimping arrangement 42, and the foil subdivided into separate covers by separating means 50.
