Abstract

1,247,637. Latches. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 16 April, 1970, No. 18108/70. Heading E2A. A door lock comprises a shaft 26 connected to a door latch or bolt mechanism 27, an inner door handle 32 operable to rotate the shaft to release the latch or bolt mechanism, an escutcheon, an outside door handle 16 rotatably mounted on the escutcheon, a bolt 21 transversely slidable in the outside door handle, a lock barrel 23 rotatable in the outside door handle and operable to move the bolt between an unlocking position in which one end portion 36 of the bolt connects the outside door handle to the shaft to permit release of the latch or bolt mechanism by rotating the outside door handle and a locking position in which the end portion 36 is withdrawn to disconnect the outside door handle from the shaft. A spigot 17 on the outside handle 16 fits within an opening in the escutcheon 12 which has an annular projection 15 which engages in an opening in a backing plate 13, the backing plate and escutcheon being screwed together and to one side of the door. The spigot 17 has a recess 22 in which the bolt 21 is moved, by a key rotating an offset pin 24 on the lock barrel engaged in a transverse recess in the bolt, from the unlocked position in which the bolt end portion 36 engages in a recess 35 in a bush 28 secured by a pin 29 to one end portion of the shaft 26 to a locked position in which another end portion 38 engages in a recess 37 in the escutcheon the end portions 36 disengaging the recess 35. A pair of pins 30 in the bush engage in grooves in the spigot 7 and locate the bush 28 axially of the spigot. A spring washer 20 and circlip 18 snap in a groove 19 of the spigot to rotatably retain the handle to the escutcheon. The inner handle 32 is secured by a screw 33 to the other end of the shaft 26 and the handle rotates in a collar 34 fixed to the inner side of the door. The inner door handle is rotatable to release the latch or bolt mechanism when the outer handle is inoperative.
