Abstract

[Also in Division B3] Apparatus for charging material into moulds 9 under a particular atmosphere comprises a container 1 subdivided into at least three chambers 6, 7 and 8 sealed from one another, ducts 2, 3 and 4 for the supply and discharge of gases, and an inlet 5 for the material being introduced into the moulds. The chambers are constructed as dishes open at the top and movable through the cylinderical container 1 in the direction indicated by the arrows b. Sealing rings in slots 19-24 in the end faces 13-18 seal the individual chambers 6, 7 and 8 from the container 1. In use the dishes are moved through the container 1 in the direction shown so that each mould in turn is located under the inlet 5 where it is filled, vacuum or special gases being supplied via the ducts 2, 3 and 4. Different atmospheres may be supplied through the different ducts but because the length of each chamber is less than the distance between adjacent ducts, the atmosphere within the chamber 7 remains constant until all the moulds 9 contained therein have been filled. In an embodiment, Fig. 3, the chambers are in the form of segments of a circle, the chambers rotating past an inlet 39 for the material and having their atmosphere supplied or withdrawn through ducts 31-38.
