Apparatus for holding thermal lances 1 for use in forming openings 4 in walls or like structures 3 comprises a frame 5 ... 13, for receiving a plurality of thermal lances which can be burned simultaneously and lie alongside each other or be disposed in a ring formation, the spacing between the lances being such that the opening formed in the structure is without residual, intermediate bridge-like or web portions. The thermal lances each consist of an iron tube filled with iron wires, the spaces between the wires acting as passages for oxygen which is supplied from a pipe 2 and ignited at the front ends. The lances are supported in plates 5, 6, the plate 5 being carried by a strut 9 consisting of a pair of articulated joints 8 adjust. able about mutually perpendicular axes. The strut 9 is secured to a tube 11 which is slidably adjustable along a rod 10 and connected by an articulated joint 8 to a supporting bar 13. The frame is shiftable horizontally or may run along rails. The rear plate 6 is slidably carried by a rod 14 secured to the front plate 5 and the lances are slidable in slots 15 in the front plate and are clamped or tensioned by springs to the rear plate. The slots 15 may be oblique so that inclined or vertical openings may be cut in the wall. A second pair of slotted plates 5, 6 carrying lances may be provided so that when the lances in the first pair of plates have burned away they may be quickly replaced and ignited by the still hot wall. A smoke extraction hood may be provided. The lances may be fed by hand, by a weight attached to a cable or by springs.
