Abstract
1,247,122. Sound source locating. SPERRY RAND CORP. 11 March, 1970 [12 March, 1969], No. 11702/70. Heading H4D. In a sound-monitoring system for installation on a ship, e.g. to detect other vessels in the ship's path, primary receiving means are responsive to sounds from one or more specified regions of interest, auxiliary receiving means are responsive to sounds from another region, signals from all receiving means are subjected to amplification with automatic gain control (AGC), reference signals each representing the long-term average of signal amplitude for a respective region are derived, and an alarm indicates if such a reference signal is momentarily exceeded by signals from a said region of interest. In the Fig. 1 system microphones 15, 13 detect sounds from port and starboard regions P, S of interest and sound aft (region A) is detected by microphone 17. The microphone outputs are multiplexed at 21, amplified at 27, de-multiplexed at 29 and routed to appropriate channels P, A, S. The P, A and S signals are summed at 31 to provide an AGC control signal. The AGC time constants are such that a momentary gain change prevents amplifier saturation and persists for at least one multiplex sampling cycle, whereby a burst of sound actuating any microphone gives a signal which passes through amplifier 27 without significant distortion but with essentially the same gain as corresponding signals from the other microphones. This ensures that spurious pick-up, e.g. by microphone 13 or 15 of sounds from region A, does not actuate the alarm. In each channel the long-term average amplitude is derived at 37 and any signal exceeding this by some threshold amount in the P or S channel actuates an alarm 39. The channel outputs at 37 are fed to a cathode-ray tube readout 41 giving a Y pattern display, or to a magnetic recorder. Switch system 45 enables selected ones of the P, A and S signals to be monitored on a loud-speaker or headphones 43, and enables calibrated delays to be inserted in the signal channels for determining the bearing if a sound source.
