Abstract
1,246,977. Endoscopes. OLYMPUS OPTICAL CO. Ltd. 23 Sept., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967; 1 Feb., 1968], No. 45052/68. Heading A5R. An endoscope comprises a probe (not shown) for insertion in a body cavity, connected by a first, preferably flexible, tube 3 to the interior of a control housing 1, an objective lens system in the probe for transmitting light from an object in the body cavity through the tube 3 to an eyepiece 5 in the housing 1, and a plurality of connections, such as pipes, fibre optical light conductors and electrical conductors extending from the probe through the tube 3, in and through the housing 1 and through a flexible tube 19 to terminate at or adjacent a connector 20 for coupling the endoscope to external operating devices. A water and air feed tube 24 passes from the probe to communicate with a hollow member 25 connected by a tube 27 to an air pump 15 and with a tube 26 connected to a water pump 17. A hollow actuator member 29 in member 25 allows air to be pumped into the body cavity via tubes 27, 24 when its throughbore 29a is closed, and when pressed against a spring 30 into member 25 member 29 closes off the end 24a of tube 24 and allows water to be pumped into the body cavity. A suction pump 33 communicates via a tube 28 with the probe and is effective on closing an opening 31a in a hollow member 31 in housing 1, tube 28 having an opening 28b within member 31. The body cavity may be illuminated by a lamp in the probe or by an external lamp 9 and an optical fibre guide 6. Light passes from the objective lens system to the eyepiece 5 by an optical fibre guide 18, part of the light beam being diverted by a halfsilvered mirror 22a to a photoelectric device 23 connected to an automatic exposure control 13 for use in photography of the cavity. The air pump 15 may be controlled to pump a desired quantity of air into the cavity by a foot switch in series with an electromechanical or electronic timer switch.
