Abstract
1,246,891. Diode read-only stores. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 27 Oct., 1969 [12 Nov., 1968], No. 52593/69. Heading G4A. A diode read-only memory comprises a plurality of conducting rows and columns forming a matrix partitioned into a plurality of sectors, diodes connected between the rows and columns at selected intersections of the matrix, and means for effecting parallel-coincident row and column selection in the sectors, diodes present shunting a read signal away from output connections. A positive voltage is applied to one of 8 row terminals R (only one shown), and one of 16 column terminals C (only one shown) is grounded, thus selecting a corresponding one of 8 x 16 crosspoints in each of 8 sectors A-H, reading out an 8-bit word to output terminals 01-08. Two extra columns CO, CO<SP>1</SP> are provided, connected by diodes to every row in sectors A-D, E-H respectively. After reading, any accumulated charge is discharged via terminals D1 Protection diodes (not shown in Fig. 2) are included in the column lines, and have by-pass conductors which may be removed when error correcting codes are being used to compensate for faulty diodes. By connecting 01 to 05, 02 to 06, 03 to 07 and 04 to 08 and grounding a selected one of columns CO and CO<SP>1</SP>, a 4-bit word can be read out, the grounded 4 sectors not contributing. By connecting 01 to 05, 02 to 06, 03 to 07 and 04 to 08 and grounding all but one of these pairs, a 2-bit word can be read-out on columns CO, CO<SP>1</SP>. By connecting CO to CO<SP>1</SP> and grounding all but one of 01-08, a single bit can be read-out on CO-CO<SP>1</SP>.
