Abstract

1,246,871. Graft polymers. ROHM G.m.b.H. 23 Jan., 1969 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 3969/69. Addition to 1,068,283. Heading C3G. [Also in Division C5] A graft polymer comprises (A) a main chain of a polymer of isobutylene or a polymer or copolymer of at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms or of fumaric or itaconic acid with a C 8 to C 18 -alcohol and (B) grafted branch chains derived from an imidazole of formula (wherein R represents a group containing a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond and R<SP>1</SP> 1 , R1 2 and R1 3 , which may be the same or different, each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aralkyl group, or R<SP>1</SP> 1 and R1 2 , together with the two adjacent carbon atoms, form a ring and R<SP>1</SP> 3 is as herein before defined) and, if desired, at least one further monomer containing a tertiary nitrogen atom, other than an imidazole of Formula I, the graft polymer containing from 2 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of the said main chain, of units derived from said imidazole of Formula I and the said further monomer, when present. The main chain may be derived from a mixture of at least two of the said esters or of at least one of the said esters with an ester of acrylic or methaorylic acid with a C 1 to C 4 -alcohol, an aminoalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid or vinyl acetate. Specified further graft monomers (B) are N-vinyl lactams, thiolactams, cyclic imides, oxazolidones and carboxylic acid amides. The graft monomer mixture may also comprise a nitrogen-free ester of acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic or fumaric acid. The graft polymers are prepared in solution, e.g. in mineral oil, using a free radical catalyst, and are used as a dispersing agent and/or detergent for lubricating oils, in conjunction with a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate if desired. Examples are given in which a copolymer derived from methyl methacrylate and a mixture of methacrylate esters of fatty alcohols (average carbon number 14À0) is grafted with 1-vinyl-2-methyl imidazole, 1-vinyl-2-ethylimidazole or 1-vinyl. imidazole, and a copolymer derived from methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and the said mixture of methacrylate esters, or from n-butyl methacrylate and the said mixture, is grafted with 1 -vinyl-2-methyl-imidazole.
