Abstract
1,246,054. Valves. BATTELLEMEMORIAL INSTITUTE. 2 May, 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 22625/69. Heading F2V. A bi-stable valve for controlling the flow of fluid through an opening 5 formed in a wall 2 separating two environments, of which one is adapted to be permanently supplied with fluid under pressure P 1 from a source, comprises an elastic membrane 6 formed with ports 7, the membrane being elastically deformed to come into contact with the wall 2 to engage the opening 5 when the difference in pressures acting on its surfaces reaches a particular valve whereby dynamic depression of the fluid on the downstream side brings about the deformation when the difference in static pressures P 1 -P 2 is less than the said particular value. In its deformed state, the membrane 6 preferably allows a small passage of fluid through a porous portion (S 1 ) of itself (Fig. 2, not shown) so that on partial restriction of the opening 5 in the second environment, a pressure build-up on the downstream side of the membrane allows it to return to its original state. The underside of the wall 2 can be plane with the membrane 6 lying in parallel relationship (Fig. 3, not shown).
