Abstract

1,245,999. Packaging reagent-containing absorbent pads. R. A. ELFAST, JUN. 30 Jan., 1969, No. 5124/69. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B1] A package for use in testing a liquid, e.g. urine, comprises a pad 12 (Fig. 3) of liquidabsorbing material, such as cotton wool or porous paper, which contains a colour-change reagent, the pad being attached to a strip 10 of sheet material and being protected, during storage, by a covering leaf 14. The strip 10 and the covering leaf are each made of a laminate of aluminium foil and a plastics material layer. The leaf 14 is sealed to the strip 10 by two longitudinal and two transverse welds. The covering leaf may be formed by folding the strip 10 over on itself (Fig. 2, not shown). In order to carry out a test, the covering leaf is removed, and the sensitized pad is dipped in the liquid to be tested. If the pad does not contain a light, air and/or moisture-sensitive reagent, the edges of the package need not be sealed; and the test can be carried out without removing the covering leaf. The package may comprise a series of pads along the strip (Fig. 5, not shown), each pad containing a different reagent. Fig. 9 shows a pad comprising a bag made of two layers 17, 18 of liquid-absorbent material, the bag being divided by partition walls 20, 21 into three compartments which may contain differentreagents-thus kept separate until the test is made.
