Couplings, automatic and convertible to non- automatic.-In a combined automatic train-pipe and vertical coupling, each coupler-head 1 comprises a wedge-shaped block 30 having inclined inner and outer faces 5, 6 adapted to enter a correspondingly shaped cavity formed on the opposed head between the inner face 5 and an inclined guide-face 7, the vehicle coupling being effected by means of vertically movable spring-controlled snap-bolts 10 engaging in sockets 12 of flanges 13 formed on the heads, and the train pipes 3<a>, 3<b>, 3<c> communicating with bores 2<a>, 2<b>, 2<c> which open into the inner faces 5. In the train-pipes are arranged automatically-operated valves 15, Fig. 3, each comprising an inner ported sleeve 17 adapted to be opened when the vehicles couple, or to be closed when the vehicles uncouple, and an outer ported sleeve 16 which is connected with the vehicle uncoupling mechanism. The disengagement of the bolts 10 is effected from a rotatable transverse operating-shaft 27 through the medium of an arm 41 on the shaft 27, a chain connexion 42. and a pivoted lever 33 engaging the bolt 10. A second arm 28 on the shaft 27 is connected by a link 29 to a vertically movable bar 18 which is connected through arms 16<a> to each of outer sleeves 16 of the valves in such a way that these sleeves are automatically closed when the uncoupling of the vehicles is effected. Each arm 28 is further connected by a chain 38 to one end of a pivoted lever 37, the other end of which engages under a transverse pivoted lever 35 on the opposed head, the lever 35 being connected by a link 34 to the lever 33 for operating the bolt 10. In this way, the rotation of the operating shaft 27 on one vehicle effects the disengagement of both bolts 10. The inner sleeves 17 of the valves 15 are connected by arms 17<a> to a transverse spring-controlled bar 19 operated by a push-bar 21 which projects into the wedgeshaped cavity on each coupler-head, the push-bar being operated when the vehicles approach or separate. The inclined guide-faces 7, instead of being formed as an integral part of the couplerhead, may be attached to the draw-bars 20 to which the coupler-heads are secured. Each coupler-head is further formed with a hookshaped projection 40 so that the vehicle may be coupled with a second vehicle provided with an ordinary coupling only.
