Abstract

1,245,349. Zeolite coatings. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 5 July, 1969, No. 34005/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] An extended zeolitic structure is prepared by providing a support which is coated with a layer of hydrated alumina and which is of extended dimensions (i.e. having a length and geometric surface area substantially greater than the length and geometric surface area of discrete particles) and effecting reaction between alumina of the layer of hydrated alumina and a nutrient composition comprising a'source of silica and a source of an alkali metal oxide thereby to form, in situ, a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite on (and possibly also in) the layer of hydrated alumina coated on the support. The reaction may be effected at a temperature of from 'ambient temperature to 600‹ F. for at least two hours. The source of silica may be silica hydrogel or silica hydrosol; the source of alkali metal oxide may be sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide; alternatively, sodium silicate may-be used both as the source of silica and as the source of alkali metal oxide. Alkaline earth metal apparently may be used in lieu of alkali metal. The nutrient composition, which may be in the form either of a paste or of asolution, additionally may contain a minor proportion of zeolite as seed and/or a minor proportion of alumina or alkali metal aluminate. The reactants preferably provide mole ratios of silica to alumina, alkali metal oxide to silica, and water to alkali metal oxide preferably between 1 to 1 and 25 to 1, between 0À1 to 1 and 5 to 1, and at least 10 to 1, respectively whereby philipsite, aralcite, chabazite, gmelinite, erionite, faujasite, mordenite, clinophlolite and zeolites A, B,C, E, F, H, J, K-G, M, Q, R, S, T, W, X, Y and Z may be formed. The zeolite formed may constitute 2'to 90 weight percent, of the combined alumina and zeolite content of the structure. The support may be in the form of bars, balls, chains, mesh, plates, saddles, sheets, strips, tubes or wire; exemplified materials from which the support may be formed are aluminium, steel, stainless steel, chrome steel, nickel, titanium, sintered metal materials and refractory and ceramic materials, for example glasses, magnesia, alumina, silica, other refractory metal oxides, silicates and carbides. Examples relate -to structures in which the support is a glass jar (Examples 1 and 4), an aluminium strip (Example 2), a stainless steel strip (Examples 3 and 5), a chrome steel mesh (Examples 6 and 10), a titanium mesh (Examples 7 and 11), a nickel mesh (Example 8) and a coiled stainless steel tube (Example 9).
