Abstract
1,245,200. Activatable cells, separators therefor. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 23 June, 1970 [3 July, 1969], No. 30373/70. Heading H1B. A separator for an activatable lead-acid battery which is capable of storing sulphuric acid and allowing it to diffuse out on contact with water comprises a central portion wettable by sulphuric acid but inert to it in all concentrations and permeable surface layers on each side of the central part which are non-wettable by sulphuric acid and again inert to it in all concentrations. The central part may be a felt or fabric of silica fibres optionally contained in a fabric envelope. The outer layer may be a porous non-wettable envelope or a coating of PTFE applied by spraying. The whole may be evacuated to allow the sulphuric acid to enter.
