Abstract
1,244,981. Electromagnetic actuators. ADVANCED DYNAMICS Ltd. 31 March, 1969 [5 Jan., 1968], No. 761/68. Heading H1P. A rotary actuator comprises a stator A including a magnetic circuit with four inwardly extending polepieces 1, 2, 3, 4 separately energized by four coils, and a two-pole armature 5 rotatably mounted in the space between the pole-pieces 1, 2, 3, 4, the poles of the armature 5 being of sufficient width to overlap the faces of the pole-pieces 1, 2, 3, 4 only in the neutral position shown to which the armature is returned by a spring (not shown). When the coils of a pair of opposite polepieces 1, 2; 3, 4 are selectively energized the armature rotates anticlockwise or clockwise until it contacts limit stop 6 or 7. The actuator may be modified by increasing the number of stator polepieces in multiples of four and increasing the number of armature poles by the corresponding multiple of two, to produce a larger torque with corresponding reduction of angle of rotation. The armature may be connected to an output shaft via a ratchet device to produce a bidirectional stepping motor. The stator yoke may be of any tubular form e.g. square, octagonal or round.
