Apparatus for turning inside out hollow flexible articles which are closed on three sides comprises turning grippers 20 which are rotatable about vertical gripper carriers 10 to pick up and grasp workpieces 38 and on their return movement turn them inside out and deliver them to clamps 58, 60 to be subsequently deposited in a magazine 66. In operation, an air jet lifts the front edge 42 of the workpiece 38 and the larger arm 25 of each gripper 20 enters between the layers of the workpiece through the only open side and the second arm 28 goes below the supporting table 44. The gripping arms 25, 28 are then closed on the workpiece and locked in the closed position. As the grippers 20 return towards the position shown in Fig. 1, the workpiece is turned inside out and in each case the smaller arm lies inside the workpiece. The grippers 20 can then be rotated about their longitudinal axes 11 to tension the workpiece and pull it into shape. The workpiece is then passed to clamps 58, 60 which are mounted on a pivoted frame 52. As the frame 52 moves away from the grippers 20, which have been opened by the abutment of a blocking lever 30 on a fixed stop, the workpieces engage on castellations 70 on the top edge of an open topped magazine 66 and are pulled from the clamps to fall into the magazine. If the workpieces are not properly located in the clamps 58, 60 from the grippers 20 the machine stops. The magazine is resiliently supported and takes workpieces until it is so downwardly displaced that a switch is operated to stop the machine. The table of the machine is in two parts 2,3 which can be laterally adjusted to accommodate different sizes of workpiece.
