Abstract

1,244,854. Printing surfaces. RICOH K.K. 28 Aug., 1968 [2 Sept., 1967], No. 41004/68. Heading B6C. The number of prints taken from a printing plate is controlled by coding the printing plate converting the code to electrical signals prior to printing and using the signals to limit the number of prints produced from the plate by a printing machine. The plate may carry a printing area a and, outside the area a, a coded number M in the range 0 to 999, coded as binary numbers in lines T 1 , T 2 , T 3 . The number M may be read out by a photoelectric transducer apparatus, or may be an array of punched holes read by brushes or a photoconducting apparatus. Preferably the printing machine is an offset lithographic printing machine, with photographically imaged plates, and the number M is generated by a selected combination of shadow masks during imaging. Alternatively the number M may be printed on to or punched into an imaged and developed printing plate.
