Abstract

Steering and balancing.-The control planes of aeroplanes are connected to separate balancing-surfaces in such a manner that the pull on the controls due to air pressure on the balancing-surfaces counterbalances wholly or in part that due to the pressure on the control planes. Fig. 3 shows a machine having mounted at each side of the fuselage, on the ends of a shaft h which actuates the elevator, a lever d' carrying a plane c<1>. A similar plane c<2> carried by a lever d<2> is connected either to the rudder bar, as shown below the fuselage, or by means of a spindle k and lever m to the control wires l of the rudder as shown above the fuselage. Ailerons may be similarly balanced in a biplane by a plane carried on a lever pivoted to one of the struts and connected at its rear end to the control wire connecting the ailerons on the upper and lower planes. The balancing-planes may be weighted to balance the control planes statically as well as aerodynamically, and may be changed for others of different size or their leverage altered to effect adjustment. They may also be arranged in different planes to their corresponding control members. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 14577/15.
