Abstract
1,244,803. Skiving plastics; cutting heated plastics material. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 7 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 12179/69. Headings B4B and B5A. Tapes, &c. are skived from a blank of an aromatic polyimide by a process wherein the blank surface and a skiving knife are maintained at 250-500‹ C.,e.g. by reflected electrically produced heat, an infra-red heater, or a hot gas stream. A cylindrical blank may be rotated against a knife blade parallel to its axis, and the product may be drawn away under 100-4000 p.s.i. tension, and/or rolled to improve the surface. Preferably, the knife blade subtends an angle of 5-20 degrees at the blank surface or the tangent thereto. The polyimide may be poly-N,N<SP>1</SP>-(4,4<SP>1</SP>-oxydiphenylene)-pyromellitimide, or based on 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>- benzophenone - tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-oxydianiline &c.
