Abstract

1,244,085. Static converters. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. 26 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968; 28 June, 1968], No. 15924/69. Heading H2F. A Cockroft-Walton, type voltage multiplier comprises 3 columns or stacks of capacitors 204, 202, 206 mounted as shown, Fig. 3, in a tank filled with liquid dielectric together with an input transformer 16 the primary of which is connected to an auto-transformer 18 outside the tanks whereby the supply voltage can be adjusted between 0 and 220 Volts at 50 cycles/ sec. Rectifiers 14 are disposed in the space defined by the stacks and transformer 16. Each rectifier 14 consists of eight controlled avalanche silicon diodes connected in series inside a casing. Each capacitor is formed from a layered strip including a strip of aluminium, a strip of paper, and a strip of organic polymer, and folded in zig-zag fashion as shown Fig. 4. The capacitors are stacked and connected in series the assembly being coated with epoxy resin and forming a cube. The junctions of the capacitors and the ends of the series string thereof are connected to terminals projecting from the cube or stack. The secondary terminals of transformer 16 are connected to stacks 202, 204 and to U-shaped screens 302, 304 partially surrounding the stacks to reduce stray capacitances. The rectifiers are supported by their connecting wires to the capacitors. An output of 100,000 Volts is contemplated with a tank of 30 cms. diameter and 11 cms. high, and is obtainable across capacitor stack 206.
