An " ironing " machine for heat sealing thermoplastic labels 71 which may be marked, to articles 8 comprises an upper clamping jaw 2, pivotable about a shaft 4 in a double arm lever 41, 42 having a knife edge 22 (Fig. 2) and heating elements 23, and a lower clamping jaw 3, pivoted on a shaft 31 of a piston 52 in a support 5, itself pivotable horizontally to allow the article 8 to be placed on a surface 33 of the jaw 3, the upper and lower jaws being laterally movable relative to each other. A resiliently and adjustably mounted knife edge 11 coacts with the knife edge 22 to provide a scissors action. In operation tape 7, Fig. 2, is fed between the knife edges 11, 22 and is cut as the jaw 2 pivots clockwise about the swivel shaft 4 and then falls free or under the action of an air jet, onto the article 8 on the lower clamping jaw 3 which is now in a raised position so clamping the article between itself and projections 19 on a bracket 18. The heated jaw 2 initiates the adhesion process whilst further clockwise motion of the jaw 2 causes it to move from right to left relative to the label and article so effecting an ironing motion to eliminate any creases in the label. The surfaces 21, 23 are now parallel due to the pivoting action of the jaw 3. The tape 7 may have the thermoplastic material formed as a layer on it or incorporated as threads within it, or the material may be fed jointly with the tape as a foil assisted by spot adhesion or, finally the tape may be formed entirely of thermoplastic threads.
