Abstract

1,243,680. Bituminous composition. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 13 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 59464/68. Heading C3N. The ductility of bitumens is improved by incorporating an oxidized hard bitumen in an amount not exceeding 20% by weight of the total composition into a soft unblown bitumen. A " hard bitumen " is defined as a vacuum residue or an atmospheric residue, whilst the " soft bitumen " is defined as a bitumen having a penetration greater than the range 20-30. The oxidized hard bitumen may be incorporated in powder form and is suitably present in an amount 5-20% by weight, based on the total weight. Suitable oxidized hard bitumens have a softening point of 130-150‹ C. and a penetration of 0 at 25‹ C., whilst suitable soft bitumens have a penetration of 180-220.
