Abstract

1,243,379. Permanent magnets; magnetizing; anisotropic magnets. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Oct., 1969 [31 Oct., 1968], No. 52765/69. Headings H1H and H1P. An anisotropic permanent magnet is manufactured by orienting particles of an anisotropic mass of powder of a ferromagnetic element or alloy or of ferrite, by subjecting the mass to external magnetic field, isostatically compressing the mass, and slightly deforming it anisotropically and plastically while maintaining isostatic pressure. An alloy powder has hexagonal crystal structure and composition M 5 R wherein M is Co, or a combination of Co with one or more of Fe, Ni, Cu, and R is one or more of elements yttrium, thorium, and rare earths. Alternatively M is Co and R is Sm. The powder is placed in a rubber bag and oriented in a field of at least 1000 Oe., and compressed under magnetization with pressure of 1-2 kilobars, after which the bag is evacuated and sealed for isostatic densification at, e.g., 8k bars. The bag is removed and the block soldered into a ductile, e.g. lead container, which is hydrostatically and isostatically compressed to, e.g. 20k bars, and deformed anisotropically and plastically, during which a saturating field of, e.g., 30,000 Oe. is applied. The container 10 is placed between two perforated loose dies 8, 9 resting on shoulders 2 of the bore of an hydraulic compression vessel 1 containing petrol, and opposed plungers 4, 6 are operated by rams 5, 7. Pressure on container 10 is exerted by plungers 4, 6 until on raising pressure on plunger 6 the liquid column and both plungers descend, until plunger 6 deforms container 10 between dies 8, 9. Pressure is then released and the container removed and opened.
