Abstract

1,243,233. Trimming brushes. RANK XEROX Ltd. 1 Aug., 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 36777/68. Heading A4K. In trimming apparatus for a cylindrical brush 9 of pile fabric or fur, a series of clipper heads 50, of the kind in which pairs of comb teeth 61, 62 are relatively oscillated to effect cutting, are mounted on a guide 76, 91, which is reciprocated longitudinally, as long as electric motor (MOT-2) is energized. The comb teeth 62 are oscillated, by a motor (MOT-3), through a flexible drive (70), so that half of them are in the opposite phase to the other half. The positions of heads 50 and the brush, which is rotated rapidly during trimming, are controlled by hydraulic means, actuated by solenoid-operated valves. Two brushes are held in a frame (13), which is swingable back and forth through 180 degrees, to bring one brush 9 into a working position opposite clipper heads 50, while the other is brought into a loading and unloading position. The frame 13 is swung by means of a hydraulic drive (25, Fig. 6, not shown) under the control of a valve, responsive to solenoids (SOL-1 and SOL-2, Fig. 7, not shown). When the brushes reach their positions, either limit switch (LSI or LS2) is closed by arm (122) pressing on button (123 or 124). An electromagnetic clutch (51), an electromagnetic brake (58), a timer and a solenoid (SOL-3) are energized through the limit switch (LS1 or LS2). The solenoid opens a valve to extend the hydraulic ram 103. This tilts the table 96 to bring the heads 50 into contact with the brush, which is rotated by a motor (MOT-1) through the electromagnetic clutch (51). The table 96 continues to tilt about pivots 101 until stop 105 contacts base frame 113. When the timer times out, contacts (ITD-3) are opened to de-energize the clutch and brake and solenoid (SOL-3). The heads 50 are retracted by spring-operated dash-pot 107, until stop 106 contacts base 110. A further timeroperated switch (ITD-2) energizes solenoid (SOL-2) to operate the valve of the hydraulic drive (25), so as to swing frame (13) back into its original position. As the brushes leave their positions, both limit switches (LS-1 and LS-2) are open to leave the timer on open circuit while it re-sets itself. A suction head 120 removes the clippings and helps to straighten the brush filaments, in the cutting zone.
