Abstract

Adjacent article parts 8, 10 of thermoplastic materials having relatively low dielectric loss properties are joined by introducing a normally solid agent 12 responsive to dielectric heating at the interface of the parts 8, 10, the agent having a property of bonding incompatibility with the thermoplastic materials, subjecting the agent 12 and the parts 8, 10 to a high frequency electric field whereby the agent 12 becomes heated dielectrically and softens the portion 20 of the parts adjacent the agent, by conduction, and causing the portions 20 to flow non-adhesively around the agent to join the parts 8, 10 together in areas 22. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the agent 12 in filament form and which may be transparent, opaque or coloured is placed between two sheets 8, 10 of polyethylene, polypropylene or poly. styrene. Specified materials for the agent 12 are polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene chloride and vinylidene fluoride, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyacetals and cellulose derivatives. The overlapped sheets 8, 10 are positioned between bartype electrodes 14 energized by a power source 16, e.g. a vacuum tube oscillator. Pressure may be applied by the electrodes 14 which may be coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Alternatively, the electrodes may wheel- or rollertype and may be shaped to the required shape of the finished product. After joining, cooling may be assisted by an air blast. The agent 12 or the sheets 8, 10 may be preheated prior to the joining operation. In other embodiments, the agent 12 may be applied in flattened discontinuous form to form a longitudinal seam in a tube, Fig. 4A; the agent may be applied in granulated or powdered form or it may be applied in a paste or viscous form which subsequently hardens.
