Apparatus for sequentially numbering documents comprises a further numbering device so that the complete number meets the requirements of a test to safeguard against fraud. According to the requirements of the test so the wheels of the further numbering device are advanced a variable number of steps according to whether the sequential numbering involves units only or in combination with tens or other higher denomination. The apparatus may be pawl and ratchet with deep notches. The control may be fluidic with a plugboard to enable the weighting system to be altered.
