Abstract

1,242,661. Chromatographic adsorbents. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 7 Jan., 1969 [8 Jan., 1968], No. 1032/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C3] An adsorbent comprising a crosslinked polymer containing in interpolymerised form 0.5 to 2.5 mole proportions of an alkylidenebisacrylamide, the alkylidene group of which contains 1 to 2 carbon atoms, and 1 mole proportion of acrylamide, methacrylamide or a combination thereof, is used for the chromatographic analysis of water soluble polymers. For instance polyethyleneimines may be separated into molecular weight fractions by passing a solution of the polyethyleneimines in a carrier solvent, for instance water or a diethylenetriamine-acetic acid mixture buffered to pH 8, through the adsorbent. In an example, a stainless steel column is packed with N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide/acrylamide interpolymer particles by flowing a slurry of the particles in a solvent carrier into the column under gas pressure and the interpolymer is calibrated by passing aqueous solutions of dextrans of different molecular weights through the column.
