Abstract

1,242,463. Al kyd/petroleum resins. NIPPON PETROCHEMICALS CO. Ltd. 6 May, 1969, No. 23134/69. Heading C3P. An alkyd resin is made by (i) polymerizing a fraction of hydrocarbon oil, boiling within the range of 140‹ to 280‹ C. derived from cracking of petroleum or such a fraction to which indene or alkyindene has been added and containing above 5% by weight of indene or having an "Indene Index" (as defined) above 11% by weight, at a temperature of - 30‹ to 40‹ C. using 0À05-5% by weight of a Friedel- Crafts type catalyst, the catalyst being deactivated with an acid or alkali after the completion of the reaction, and unreacted material and low molecular weight polymers being separated to produce an aromatic hydrocarbon resin having a softening point of above 140‹ C. and a bromine number of 5 to 40, (ii) melting or dissolving the above aromatic hydrocarbon resin in a hydrocarbon solvent and adding 1 to 30 parts of an unsaturated polybasic carboxylic acid, anhydride or chloride thereof to 100 parts by wt. of the resin, and then heating at a temperature within the range of 120‹ to 520‹ C. for a period of 1 to 16 hours to prepare an adduct of the aromatic hydrocarbon resin and the acid, anhydride or chloride; (iii) mixing (1) the adduct, (2) a polybasic carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, and (3) an alcoholysis reaction product which is prepared by mixing a polyhydric alcohol, fatty oil and an alcoholysis catalyst and heating at 180‹ to 270‹ C., and (iv) subjecting the mixture to heat at 180-270‹ C. with agitation. In the Examples (1-5) a cracked petroleum fraction was polymerized using a BF 3 -ethyl ether catalyst and the resin was reacted with maleic anhydride to form an adduct which was then reacted with phthalic anhydride and the reaction product of soybean or linseed oil and pentaerythritol. The above alkyd resins may be formed into a varnish with mineral spirits.
