Abstract
1,242,405. Adducts of linear phosphonitrilic chloride polymers. W. R. GRACE & CO. 9 Oct., 1968 [12 Oct.. 1967], No. 47933/68. Heading C1A. Novel adducts of a linear phosphonitrilic chloride polymer and a metal salt, having one of the following formulµ wherein X is chlorine, bromine or fluorine, q is 1 or 2 and has the same value in a single formula, n is from 3 to 15, M is platinum, ruthenium, osmium, iridium, palladium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum or tungsten; and wherein the sums of x + q, y + q and z + q being equal to a stable co-ordination number of the metal, are prepared by heating at 175‹ to 250‹ C. for 0.25 to 20 hours in an inert, substantially moisturefree environment a linear phosphonitrilic chloride of the formula with a salt which is a chloride, fluoride, bromide, oxychloride, oxyfluoride or oxybromide of one of the metals listed above, in which the coordination number of the metal in the salt is 1 or 2 less than the stable co-ordination number of the metal. Preferably the metal is in its stable oxidation state and the reaction is carried out in the absence of a solvent. The linear phosphonitrilic chloride starting material may be prepared by reacting an excess of PCl 5 with NH 4 Cl under anhydrous conditions in a refluxing solvent to give a benzene-insoluble waxy poly- meric solid of probable formula and heating this waxy solid in an inert atmosphere at 240‹ to 260‹ C. at a pressure of 1 to 2 atmospheres for 2 to 8 hours with the evolution of PCl 5 .
