Abstract

Apparatus 10 for cutting blocks of semi-soft material, such as cheese, (11), Fig. 9 (not shown), encased in a liner of impervious film (12) in an elongated mould (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises a roller conveyer 14 on to which the mould is placed, a cutting frame 24 with one or three cutting wires 27 adjacent to the conveyer, and a ram 30 which forces the cheese from its mould, which is held stationary by frame 24, and through the cutting frame 24, so dividing the cheese into longitudinal pieces, the cutting frame 24 being provided with cutters (28), (29), Fig. 12 (not shown), in alignment with wires 27 for cutting the film (12) in advance of wires 27. A turntable 16 with a lifting ram 20 is provided so that the cheese in its mould may be rotated for removal of the mould end covers (18), (19), Fig. 8 (not shown), and correctly positioned on the conveyer 14 for manual transmission, after removal of a strip (12a), Fig. 9 (not shown), of the film liner (12) from one end of the block, to a position with the latter end adjacent to cutting frame 24 and the other end adjacent to the ram 30. The ram 30 forces the cheese from the mould, which is tapered longitudinally with the smaller end adjacent to the ram, through the cutting frame 24, which cuts the cheese longitudinally, on to a second roller conveyer 31. The head of the ram is provided with vertical grooves 30a in alignment with the cutting wires 27 to allow the latter to completely pass through the cheese. The film liner is then stripped from the top and sides of the cheese. A vertical cutting frame 40 is positioned at one side of the conveyer 31 and is moved towards a fixed vertical plate 37 at the other side by a hydraulic cylinder 41 linked by a cable (42), Fig. 5 (not shown), to the underside of the frame 40 so that the cheese is cut transversely into smaller pieces which may then be removed for packing. The frame 40 has vertical cutting wires 39 with knives at their lower ends to cut the film liner on the bottom of the cheese in advance of these wires. The plate 37 has a series of slots 37a in alignment with the wires 39 to permit the latter to pass completely through the cheese. The rams and hydraulic cylinder are actuated by a high pressure oil system powered by a dual pressure air system, Fig. 6 (not shown). Much of the hydraulic and pneumatic circuitry used is common to the circuits used to actuate the ram 30 and the cylinder 41, suitable change-over valves being provided to actuate one or the other. The higher air pressure system is used only on the forward stroke of the ram 30 to conserve power.
