Abstract
1,242,063. Detecting particles photoelectrically. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 7, 1968 [Nov. 10, 1967 and March 5, 1968], Nos. 51371/67 and 10757/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Divisions H3-5] Specification describes method of measuring or detecting the movement 11 of a particle in or relative to a fluid, comprising directing a beam of laser light b at the particle and observing the change in frequency, due to the Doppler effect, of said light scattered or reflected by the particle. As shown the particles comprise milk added to the flowing water to increase its scattering. The laser beam b, passing from laser 12 via beam-splitter 13, reflector 16 and focusing lens 18 is focused on the particles and the scattered light detected, in direction limited by stop 20, by photo-tube 19. A second "reference" beam a passes via neutral density filter 14 behind the water tube 10 and is also detected by the photo-tube 19. The photo-tube has a non-linear characteristic, whereby mixing of the two incident beams takes place and the Doppler beat appears at the output thereof. An absorber 21 absorbs the non scattered part of beam b. The laser beam may be directed along a runway to detect turbulence caused by aircraft, the photodetectors being at the side of the runway, whereby the Doppler beat is produced by self beating within the scattered light using the homodyne effect, or at the far end of the runway whereby beating at the photo-tube takes place as in the illustrated embodiment. The laser beam may be directed along a river, to detect its velocity, the scattered and reference beam being detected by telescopes. The laser beam may be directed at a moving steel strip to detect Doppler shift in the reflected light.
