1,241,914. Biocidal/deodorizing composition in gel form. AIRWICK INDUSTRIES Inc. 15 Sept., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 45456/69. Heading A5E. A biocidal and/or deodorising composition in the form of a gel consists essentially of 1-6% by weight of a gelling agent and 99-94% by weight of an aqueous medium comprising a volatile biocidal and/or deodorizing agent in which said gelling agent is a mixture of kappacarrageenan and iota-carrageenan in a weight ratio of 1.5:1-7:1. A preferred composition contains the carrageenan fractions in a weight ratio of 3.5:1. within the aqueous medium the biocidal and/or deodorising agent typically comprise 1-10% by weight of the composition and suitable such agents are perfumes, bactericides, essential oils or insecticides which may be dispersed in the aqueous medium with the aid of conventional emulsifiers. Essential oils specified are pine oil, lemon grass oil, spearmint oil, wintergreen oil, cedarwood oil, Canadian fir oil. Optional ingredients in the aqueous medium are calcium chloride or potassium chloride in amounts up to 3% by weight of the gel; water-miscible anti-freeze agents in amounts up to 10% by weight of the gel; pigments such as sodium chlorophyllin in amounts up to 0.05% by weight of the aqueous medium; and conventional bactericides such as sodium benzoate or methyl-, ethyl- or propyl p-hydroxybenzoate.
