Abstract

1,241,911. Solvent extraction of metals. MOLYBDENUM CORP OF AMERICA. 1 Aug., 1969, No. 38657/69. Heading C1A. Metal values in aqueous solution are recovered and separated by a double solvent extraction process wherein an aqueous solution containing at least two metals is mixed with a first immiscible solvent which selectively extracts at least one first metal; the settled solvent and aqueous. phases are separated; the aqueous phase is then contacted with a second immiscible solvent which selectively extracts at least one second metal; the solvent and aqueous phases are allowed to settle and the above steps are. repated one or more times again; the solvent and aqueous phases are subsequently finally separated, and the solvent phases stripped to obtain solutions concentrated in each of said metals, and an aqueous raffinate phase depleted in those metals. The process is most useful for separation of the rare earth metals in solution. The process is best performed by passing the aqueous solution in countercurrent alternately with the first solvent and then the second solvent. In Example 1 a mixture of the rare earths Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy and also yttrium; in aqueous solution are separated by the process of the invention using a first solvent which is a mixture of isomers of primary amines with 18-21 carbon atoms (" Primene "-Registered Trade Mark), diluted with kerosene, and a second solvent of di-2-ethyl hexyl-orthophosphoric acid diluted with xylene. Pr, Nd, and Sm-the lighter rare earths-were concentrated in the amine, Dy and Y were concentrated in the alkyl phosphate, and Gd in the aqueous raffinate.
