Abstract

1,241,759. Thermocouples. LEEDS & NORTHRUP CO. 28 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 21620/69. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H2] A length of commercially available cable is used to form an expandable thermocouple which may be used two or three times before disposal. The cable has parallel cores of Chromel and " Alumel " (Registered Trade Mark), each enamelled and covered with siliconeimpregnated asbestos felt, the pair of cores being wound zound with silicone impregnated asbestos braid. The cores are bared at one end of a length and twisted together to form a junction which is then dipped into a fluid air-drying refractory cement 14. At the other end of the length the cores are bared and their direction, length, or disposition relative to the axis of the length so adjusted by bending (and cutting, if necessary) that they may be used as the pins of a polarized connection whose spring loaded collet type sockets 27, 28 (of the same material as the respective cores) are housed in a structure 20 which provides a mounting for the cable length. The structure 20 may be mounted on the end of a rigid handle 21, 22. The thermocouple may be housed in a protective well 32 (not shown).
